Maluty and Pasha
Livestock guardian dogs are slowly starting to make their mark on farms and ranches across South Africa and our neighbours over the border, as a form of non-lethal predator control where game and livestock is present. A well-socialised dog will protect its flock with its life against even the largest of carnivores and in some instances, against people.
Due to issues of physical health or poor socialisation in the vital puppy stage, some dogs are not suitable for the task at hand and need to be rehomed into a pet home. Likewise, some breeders sell puppies into pet homes, which turn out to be a lose-lose situation.
At SALGDR, we rehabilitate these dogs to a point where they can become family members in the right household. This includes exposure to other dogs, people, pets and livestock and work on possible undesirable behaviours in the pet home. We ready these dogs for a life that is completely alien to them but that they will enjoy very much.
We do not rehome dogs to working homes. If you are looking for a working livestock guardian dog, please contact Green Dogs Conservation, or Deon Cilliers from the Endangered Wildlife Trust (deonc at ewt dot org dot za)
